The Summer Program for AUB Alumni Children (SPAAC) was launched at AUB in an official ceremony attended by President Fadlo Khuri, Associate Vice President for Development and Alumni relations Salma Oueida, participants, and their parents, on Monday July 10.

The program is a collaboration between the Continuing Education Center (CEC) and the Office of Alumni Relations and will take place from July 9 to 29, 2017. The summer program will be open to children of AUB alumni around the world to strengthen the ties between AUB and all its alumni.

Twenty young participants have joined the camp this year, coming from various parts of the world, including Europe, the United States, the Far East, and the Middle East. The youth will be staying at the dorms on campus, and will enjoy a packed program that includes trips across Lebanon; volunteering activities; Arabic, Middle Eastern history, and Archeology courses; as well as workshops on leadership skills and photography, and a variety of electives that participants can choose from, with access to all campus facilities.

AVP Salma Oueida welcomed the participants and wished them a happy upcoming three weeks. She also thanked the parents who entrusted AUB with their children.

“This program has an objective to strengthen the ties between AUB and its alumni, and to introduce their children to the culture of the University, to its activities, and its campus,” said Oueida at the opening ceremony. “Participants will get a taste of college life, and will learn further about Lebanon’s rich cultural heritage and the modern Middle East.”

President Fadlo Khuri promised the parents the safety of their children both in and outside the campus, and the high quality of the activities organized and the courses offered.

“AUB is a unique institution in that it is an American institution with some authenticity and age in the Arab world for 151 years, meaning that it’s not like any American liberal art college or research university, there are major differences,” said President Khuri. “The university has been enculturated after 151 years here and is very much part of Lebanon and the Arab world. You will have the opportunity to sample culture, history, food, tourism, and you’ll do it quickly and intensively.”
